Chic & Collected: Bookshelf Styling Tips
It can be really intimidating trying to style your bookshelves. Where do you start? Sure, putting a bunch of books on there is wonderful. But I also like for my bookshelves to look like they’ve lived a little. They should hold treasures with storied pasts—not just hardbacks. However, there’s a fine line between curated and cluttered, and that’s where a little strategy comes in.

The Story Behind My Shelf

My “shelfie” is a found, collected piece. I discovered it at the retail store I used to manage, and when I learned the store was moving in a different direction and wanted to get rid of this big, beautiful piece, I couldn’t believe my luck. I purchased it for a price I never thought possible!
Originally, the bookshelf was a pretty cream color. But I craved something bolder and moodier, so I painted it deep blue and swapped in chic gold handles. Now, it’s a piece I truly adore—one that sets the stage for styling in a way that reflects me.

How to Style Your Bookshelf Like a Pro
Here are some easy steps you can follow to create a chic and collected bookshelf of your own:
1. Start with a Blank Canvas

Take everything off your shelves first. This gives you a fresh start and helps you see the piece itself. If you want, consider painting or changing the hardware like I did—it instantly gives your shelf personality
2. Gather a Mix of Items
Think beyond just books. Pull together framed art, small sculptures, bowls, vases, candles, and personal treasures. This is what creates that lived-in, collected look.

3. Layer with Intention
Layering adds depth. Place a piece of framed art at the back of the shelf, then style smaller items in front. Stack books horizontally, then top them with a decorative object.

4. Balance is Key
A well-styled shelf is about balance, not symmetry. If you add something tall to one side, balance it with height on the opposite side. Vary shapes, textures, and finishes so it feels curated but not overwhelming.

5. Add Personality
This is the fun part—bring in pieces that reflect you! On my shelf, you’ll see a mix of gold accents, vintage finds, and personal mementos. These little touches keep your shelf from looking like a catalog and instead make it tell your story. For me, the Hat Token Sculpture on the shelf was my personal touch that I love. I truly cant remember where I found this, but I believe it was a thrift find, and I just love it.

6. Edit, Then Step Back

Once you’ve styled everything, step back and look. Does it feel cohesive? Do your eyes move across the shelf naturally? Sometimes removing just one piece can make the whole look come together.
Pro Tip
When in doubt, stick to a cohesive color palette. For me, black, white, gold, and natural tones keep everything grounded while still allowing personality to shine.
Final Thoughts
Styling a bookshelf doesn’t have to be intimidating. By mixing books with meaningful objects, layering items thoughtfully, and editing with intention, you can create a shelf that feels both chic and collected—just like you.
