Fighting Type 2 Diabetes as a Family: Our Journey to Healing.
No time to manage Type 2 Diabetes — we’re on a mission to fight it head-on.
Over the past few months, my family and I have embarked on a journey to regain control of our health. This isn’t my diagnosis, but it has deeply affected all of us because it’s my husband’s battle — and when one of us fights, we all fight.
When my husband was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, his doctor immediately prescribed a list of medications to help him manage the condition. But right from the start, we knew we didn’t just want to manage it. Our goal was to reverse it — to do everything we could to eliminate it through lifestyle changes.
And so, our journey began.
How It All Started
The doctor shared some important advice with us, including the need for my husband to lose a bit of weight. Now, my husband wasn’t obese — in fact, he’s always been pretty average in size and could comfortably fit into his clothes. But weight aside, he had some habits that weren’t serving his health at all.
Here were some of his biggest challenges:
Too much sugar: His biggest downfall? His coffee. Every single morning, he started his day with a triple triple — three creamers and three sugars. That was the very first habit we knew we needed to change.
Late-night eating: Because he works night shifts, his meal schedule was completely off balance. Eating at irregular hours made it hard for his body to process food properly.
A serious candy habit: My husband loves candy. He even has a candy jar at work that he refills twice a week — not ideal for someone trying to regulate blood sugar!
Not enough movement or rest: Between his work schedule and general fatigue, exercise and proper rest weren’t priorities.
These small, everyday choices had been adding up for years, and now we were seeing the impact.
Taking the First Steps
We decided as a family that this was going to be a team effort. It wasn’t just about him — it was about all of us learning to make healthier decisions and support each other.
Our first step was to look closely at our food habits. We started swapping out sugar, planning balanced meals, and adjusting meal times to better fit his night-shift schedule. Even small changes like reducing cream and sugar in coffee or replacing candy with healthier snacks began to make a difference.
We also committed to moving more — even if that just meant a family walk after dinner — and making rest a priority.
Final Thoughts
This journey has been full of challenges, but also full of small wins that are adding up to big changes. By making adjustments to our eating habits, staying active, and supporting each other, we’re seeing progress every single day.
Friends, one of the biggest reasons I decided to write this post is because of all the good that has come from this journey. Most importantly, I want my husband to know just how proud I am of him—not only for caring about his own health, but also for loving his family enough to make this change.
If you or someone you love is living with Type 2 Diabetes, I hope our story inspires you to take that first step toward a healthier future. Stay tuned—I’ll be sharing recipes, tips, and resources to help you create a more balanced lifestyle.
For now, I’d love to share something that has been a huge source of clarity for me. I came across Lisa A. Smith, MBA, and her podcast episode, Chronic Stress & Sugar Addiction with Dr. Eric Thomas on the S2S Podcast. It was a complete wake-up call for me, and another big reason I felt compelled to share our journey. I highly recommend checking it out—you might find it just as eye-opening as I did.
