Color Trends in Interior Design This Year

Every year, new color trends emerge that capture the essence of the times. In 2024, Pantone’s Color of the Year is “Peach Fuzz,” a soft and inviting hue. However, don’t feel pressured to follow every trend—use colors that you love and that resonate with your style. This year, bold colors like burgundy and plum are making a statement. These rich, deep colors are perfect for creating cozy and dramatic spaces.

Hot Tip: Use bold colors in smaller, enclosed spaces like powder rooms, mudrooms, or a small bedroom. They can also add a pop of personality to a butler’s pantry. If you want that pop of trending rich burgundy and plum colors, go for it!

Accent Walls: In or Out?

For years, accent walls have been a popular design choice. However, in 2024, the trend is shifting towards more cohesive and immersive wall treatments. Instead of highlighting just one wall, consider embracing bold paint colors or wallpaper on all four walls for a more unified and striking look.

The photo above illustrates the former trend of accent walls. This bedroom, which I designed years ago, features a single wallpapered wall because the homeowner was adamant about keeping the rest of the walls plain. Although I wanted to do something more daring with the entire room, we compromised with just one accent wall. Today, I encourage going all in with your design choices to create a more immersive and harmonious space.

Forever trends that always in

The design above, with wallpaper on one wall, remains a favorite of mine. Although today’s trends suggest it’s falling out of style, back in 2012, it wasn’t about following a trend—it was a creative idea to enhance a client’s room with beauty. What I’m trying to say is: “Trends come and go, but the best designs reflect your unique personality and stand the test of time.

Hot Tip: If you still love the idea of an accent wall, choose a unique material or texture that stands out. Don’t let trends stand in the way of what you love. You’ve got this!

“I’m all about the idea of wallpaper on the ceiling—the one wall most people tend to forget about. The photo above featuring the Margo Fruit Floral Wallpaper is a total showstopper, and I love how it elevates the space. So, the next time someone says it’s not trendy, stand firm and remind them—it’s not just a trend; it’s your trend.”

Mid-Tone Wood Floors: Top Interior Design Trends This Year

Light wood floors have been trending for a while, but 2024 is bringing mid-tone wood floors back into the spotlight. These tones balance light and dark, providing a rich and timeless look.

Hot Tip: Mid-tone woods are versatile and pair well with various paint colors, making them a great choice for any room.

“You know I always have something to say about trends, and when it comes to floors, I’ve been a fan of rich, dark wood for years. My advice? Choose what makes your space come alive, and don’t worry too much about trends—unless it’s making your home feel dated. Stick with timeless elegance because that never goes out of style.”

Embracing Natural Stones

Natural stones like travertine, limestone, slate, quartz, granite, and marble are making a strong comeback. The beauty of natural stone lies in its imperfections, which add character and warmth to your home.

Hot Tip: Use natural stone for countertops, backsplashes, and flooring to create a timeless and elegant look. The honed and matte finishes are particularly trendy this year.

The modern cottage or English cottage style is gaining popularity, characterized by built-in furniture pieces, inset cabinets, and a warm, cozy aesthetic. This style is perfect for those who love a layered, nostalgic look with a modern twist.

Hot Tip: Embrace warm color palettes, built-in hutches, and furniture with detailed feet to achieve this inviting and timeless style.

Say goodbye to cool grays and hello to warm tones. Deep chocolate brown is particularly trendy this year, bringing a sense of coziness and richness to interiors.

Hot Tip: Use chocolate brown in bedrooms, living rooms, and furniture to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. It pairs beautifully with other warm colors like red, green, and yellow.

Subtle Elegance

Minimalism with a touch of elegance is a key trend for 2024. Think of high-quality pieces, muted colors, and clean lines. This trend focuses on creating timeless spaces with understated sophistication.

Hot Tip: Choose furniture and fabrics that match your wall color for a monochromatic look. Opt for large, statement pieces that speak for themselves and avoid clutter to maintain a clean and elegant space.
