How to select the perfect bed

When Mark and I first got married, we thought we had everything we needed to make our little apartment feel like home. But looking back, we made some rookie mistakes—especially in the bedroom. One of our biggest missteps? We bought a full-size bed for the two of us. No one gave us any tips on selecting the perfect bed, and we were too excited to care. We slept so close that the size hardly mattered at the time!

When Reality Hits: “Is That a Bed for a Kid?”The Perfect Bed in our guest roomThis isn’t the bed from our first apartment—it’s actually our guest bedroom in the house we live in now. But thinking back, I wish I could describe the setup in that tiny one-bedroom apartment when my husband and I first got married. We thought our bedroom was cozy, but when we finally had family over, one of my relatives took one look at our bed and said, “Girl, your room is adorable, but how do you guys fit in that little bed?” That’s when it hit me—we had made a classic newlywed mistake. We were just so excited to have a place of our own that we didn’t give a second thought to bed size.

Tips on how to select the perfect bed.

If you’re just starting out in marriage or moving into a new place, you might not think much about the importance of selecting the right bed. But trust me, you will care as time goes on! Here are some essential tips I’ve learned through my experience and career as a designer:

1. Choosing the Right Size Bed

Choosing the right size bed is crucial, especially for couples. Take it from me—a full-size bed just doesn’t cut it for two people. While a king-size bed might sound luxurious, it’s not always necessary unless you want the extra space. For many couples, a queen bed is the perfect middle ground, offering enough room without overwhelming your bedroom.

2. Selecting a Comfortable Bed

Comfort is king when it comes to finding the perfect bed. When I worked at a furniture store, I quickly learned that there’s a “good, better, best” system for beds:

  • Good: A decent bed that’s functional but might not be the most comfortable. It’s usually the most affordable option.
  • Better: A more comfortable bed with additional features or better materials. It’s a step up from “good” and offers better value.
  • Best: The top-of-the-line option with the best comfort, materials, and features. You’ll pay a premium, but it’s worth it for a great night’s sleep.

What’s essential is that you try the bed out before buying it. A bed that’s rated “best” might not be the best for you. Comfort is personal, and only you know what feels right.

3. How to select the perfect bed: Try It Before You Buy It

I can’t stress this enough—always try out a bed before purchasing. Your body and sleeping habits will determine what’s most comfortable for you. While reviews and ratings can guide you, nothing beats firsthand experience. For example, my husband Mark used to have terrible back pain until we switched to a medium-firm mattress. If you’re looking for a similar option, check out the Layla Memory Foam Mattress—it was voted Best Memory Foam Mattress of 2022.

How do you choose the best bed? Try it out first. I think this is an easy one because who buys a bed without trying it out? This is the number one thing to do first when pursuing your ideal bed. From experience, I can tell you that no matter what the ratings are on a bed, it is determined by the individual who bought it. Furthermore, you are the only one who knows what feels comfortable for you. I have pointed out to clients what was said to be the best bed, and it wasn’t for them. Sometimes it is simply up to one’s body and sleeping habits.

4. Make Sure the Bed Fits Your Room

This tip isn’t about the bed itself but about ensuring the bed fits your room comfortably. A bed that’s too large for the space can make the room feel cramped, while a bed that’s too small might look out of place. Consider the proportions of your room when choosing your bed size. You want the room to feel balanced and inviting, not overwhelmed by furniture.

So, to summarize, size does matter, and you should consider it when looking for the perfect bed.

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to read this post today; I hope you found some helpful tips on how to choose the perfect bed. Remember to keep the “good, better, best” approach in mind when shopping, and you’ll be sure to find the right bed for you. What truly matters is your comfort, not what others say is the best bed out there.
